CHOPIN'S HEART
In 1849, when Frederick Chopin died, his doctor and his erstwhile companion, George Sand, surgically removed his heart and delivered it to Warsaw for safe keeping. This, at the request of a man who turned his back on his native Poland at a young age, never to return. When Blitzkrieg screamed from the Polish skies in the early morning hours of September 1st, 1939,, partisans removed the heart from its resting place and hid it in the countryside until war’s end, thereupon returning it to Warsaw to be buried beneath the third pillar of the Church of the Discovery of the Cross.
